The film's trailer was released in August 2012 and after a period of inactivity, the title was changed in March 2013 from Koothu to Netru Indru and an audio launch function was held. Prasanna revealed that Vimal had forgone his salary for the film, as a result of the producer's financial problems.Soundtrack

Sources in late October 2011 disclosed that Amudhan was working on his second film, which too was supposed to be a spoof. According to reports, the film was titled as Thalavali and was to feature look-alikes of lead Tamil actors Ajith Kumar and Vijay in the lead roles. The claims were denied by Amudhan, who officially announced his second film as Rendavathu Padam ten days later, clarifying that the film would not be a spoof. Photo shoots began by the end of November 2011.Prior to the announcement, Amudhan had already selected Vimal, Aravind Akash and Richard for the lead roles; the lead actresses had not been finalized then. In December 2011, Vijayalakshmi was chosen for the lead female role. Sanjana Singh, who had previously appeared in Renigunta, was also selected to play another role in the film. The crew revealed that the film would be shot at Chennai, Hyderabad, Pondicherry, Malaysia, Bangkok. The satellite rights of 'Rendavathu Padam' have been bagged by Sun TV for an undisclosed price.

Initially, when first reported in June 2012, it was said that the film starring Vimal would be directed by A. Sargunam simultaneously with his other project Naiyaandi. Though he quickly denied reports, citing that his assistant Naveen would make his directorial debut with the project, while he would Produce by Thirupathi Brothers and co-produce the film by Director Sarkunam with his brother Nandha Kumar. In December 2012, Lakshmi Menon and Rajkiran were added to the cast.The film began shooting schedules in March 2013.

Production
After the release of his previous directorial Settai, R. Kannan was approached to direct Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham, but Kannan opted out of the film as he was unhappy on first copy production agreement, he then announced that his next directorial would have Karthi in lead role titled "Alangaram" but the project got shelved. In early November 2013, director R. Kannan announced that his next venture would feature Vimal in the lead role and would be produced by Michael Rayappan. Kannan revealed that the film will have a rural background with Vimal playing an educated youth from a farming family and the troubles he gets into due to his energetic nature. Later in that month, Priya Anand was signed on to play an "educated girl who hails from Madurai", with Sathish also added to the cast. Filming started in December 2013 on a train, with a photo shoot also being held with the three actors.The team had revealed that they had registered two potential titles for the film, Sakkarai and Kaadhal Konjam Kammi, but opted to go with the latter as they felt the former may have created confusion with a Tamil film that had released earlier, Sakkarakatti (2008). In a significant change, Soori was signed on to replace Sathish in the supporting role and subsequently the team chose to rename the film as Oru Oorla Rendu Raja, to make most of Soori's presence in the venture.
